2018 Steelers Training Camp Player Preview – Keion Adams

For Keion Adams, this year’s training camp presents an opportunity for redemption. Prior to sustaining a shoulder injury during training camp last year which sidelined him for the 2017 season, Adams was turning heads with his physical play and athleticism. One can make the argument that he would had good chance of making the Steelers linebacker rotation, at the rate he was performing during training camp last season. This year, a full-healed Adams comes into camp with a renewed sense of self, and the determination o make the active roster and become a major contributor for the Steelers defense.

Chances of Making The Roster

Adams has all the physical attributes necessary to someday become a high-level pass rusher. His most notable skill is his ability to effectively bend the edge. In general, the most effective pass rushers from the edge are able to bend and move laterally towards the quarterback. Adams is perhaps the only outside linebacker currently on the roster, who possess natural hip flexibility to establish a strong base to bend and pressure the quarterback consistently.

The other aspect Adams has going for him is roster availabiliy. Considering the retirement of future hall of famer James Harrison and veteran linebacker Arthur Moats not resigned, Adams competition is practice squad player Farrington Hugenin. With both TJ Watt and Bud Dupree slated to be starter, the Steelers are in dire need of a rotational player to play alongside Anthony Chickillo.  For Adams to solidify a spot on the active roster, it will be imperative for him to display his ability to play special teams as well. It will be an uphill climb for Adams to return to same form from last year, yet considering what he is capable of doing, the expectation is to become a better version of what he was.
