Frank Summers trip to IR opens door for Carey Davis to return to the fold.

After the Pittsburgh Steelers placed Frank “The Tank” Summers on injury reserve this week they turned to a familiar face to fill the void by resigning the versatile Carey Davis who should step right back into the starting FB role. With David Johnson out the next few weeks due to a high ankle sprain and Matt Spaeth suffering from both a hip pointer and can’t-block-itus, Davis was the obvious choice to fill the void at full back.

The only problem is the Steelers and offensive coordinator Bruce Arians has all but fazed the FB position out of the Steelers play book. Davis should help some as he is a more adequate blocker then Summers but he won’t get on the field enough to really do much.

Davis will have to find a way to win back the fans though as many gave their hearts to Isaac Redman and I am sure are wishing he got the call up instead. The fact remains though that Redmen is an unknown. His quality pre-season play is not enough to hand over the job just yet. Coach Tomlin knows his players and being undrafted may be a key reason coach feels he needs a year of seasoning on the practice squad. Instead of being handed the starting FB job.

Davis is not the sexiest pick here but he knows the playbook and the team knows exactly what they get with him. He is versatile and can play special teams as well. Not only is Parker used to running behind him, but he can catch out of the back field and help in the short yardage situations to boot.
