Jeff Reed: Steelers Kicker Is on His Way Out, and It’s About Time

Jim McMillen November 16, 2010 2

By Tom Dale,

According to reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Steelers will be bringing in some kickers tomorrow to compete for Jeff Reed’s job.

It’s about time. Not that Mike Tomlin is a reader of mine, but I had this called as an action item back during the Steelers’ bye in Week 5.

Reed has made 15 of 22 on field goals this season for a lousy 68.2 percent success rate.

Adding fuel to the fire were his comments to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette when asked about the cheers he received after making an extra point in the fourth quarter.  ”It doesn’t surprise me,” Reed told the Post-Gazette. “If you’re not perfect in this city, man, then you’re going to hear about it. It’s been like that for nine years, and why would they stop now?”

So much for that big contract after this season and good riddance.

Unrelated to the Reed story, but considering that it is early in the week, the housecleaning should not stop here. I’m not going to beat a dead horse since it has been well chronicled on the net today, but while they are at it William Gay should get his pink slip too.

By the way, understanding an offense and calling plays should not be akin to rocket science for an NFL head coach or a quarterback coach. Just another thought for Bruce Arians.

He’s totally gone South. I don’t know what it is with Kickers. They’re great for years and then one day they stink. He looks very confused and unhappy out there.

Steelers cut Reed. Shaun Suisham is our new placekicker. I what way is that an improvement?
