The NFL Draft is quickly approaching, and a lot is being discussed as far as who the team will take with their first round pick. However, the Pittsburgh Steelers have really developed a knack when it comes to identifying talent in the later rounds. It’s pretty impossible to predict exactly who will be on the board late in the draft, but here is a look at four guys who could fit in.
Ricky Wagner
At the offensive tackle position, the Steelers have to be looking for depth. Wagner might never be a great left tackle, but the former Wisconsin Badger certainly has enough skill to provide value from the first day. His specialty is run blocking right now, but his passing technique is still average.
Jasper Collins
A few years ago, no one would think that the Steelers would actually scout Mount Union games. The DIII school across the border in Ohio is not too far of a drive, and they have to be impressed with what Jasper Collins brings to the table. Judging by the success of former alums Cecil Shorts III and fantasy football favorite Pierre Garcon, the Steelers might be ready to give the small school, wide receiver a try.
Tharold Simon
The safety position is a concern for the Steelers, as just Cortez Allen and William Gay will compete for the starting spot alongside Ike Taylor. Depth is needed in case those two do not perform, or if an injury occurs. Simon can provide that for them. He is very physical, and he played well in the SEC for LSU as part of a team concept. As long as he is not asked to lock down guys one-on-one, he should be fine.
Michael Mauti
It’s a risk on a player from nearby Penn State, but any 1st team All-American deserves at least a shot. His injuries in the past really scare teams, but a late round selection of the linebacker could provide value. The Steelers could always use depth at the linebacker position, and he would not be asked to carry a huge load right away.
