Last summer, the Pirates failed to sign their first round pick before the deadline, losing out on ace Stanford pitcher Mark Appel, who turned down $ 3.8 million, opting enter the draft again.
This year, the Pirates signed their guy.
The Pirates announced today they have signed their 2013 first round pick, catcher Reese McGuire, almost a month ahead of the signing deadline.
The Pirates drafted McGuire with the 14th pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft. McGuire, an 18-year-old catcher from Kentwood High School in Covington, Wash., hit .436 with four home runs this season. He was the Gatorade Player of the Year in Washington State.
“Today is another great day for the Pittsburgh Pirates organization,” said Pirates general manager Neal Huntington at a press conference this afternoon at PNC Park to introduce McGuire. “We are looking forward to helping him become the player and man that he believes he can be.”
“This is a dream come true for all of us as a family,” McGuire said. “I couldn’t be more proud to become a Pirate, and the confidence for the organization to chose me in the draft is very overwhelming. It’s awesome and I’m looking forward to getting started.”
McGuire called his own games in high school, which is rare for a younger catcher. He said multiple times that he is most comfortable behind the plate, even though he played third-base and the outfield in summer league last year, so a positional move isn’t likely at this point.
McGuire will start his career in the short-season Gulf Coast League, but could advance to short-season Jamestown at the end of their season if he does well in Florida.
He had previously committed to the University of San Diego before signing with Pittsburgh and will join the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Pirates.
Baseball America reported that McGuire signed for $ 2,369,000, which is $ 200,800 below the assigned value for the 14th pick.
The Pirates have now signed 16 of their draft picks, although they have yet to sign the compensation pick for not signing Appel last year, Austin Meadows.
