It’s taken a bit longer than expected, but the Steelers are going to get their first look at their biggest free agent acquisition in a full training camp practice.

The team announced Monday that safety Mike Mitchell has been activated from the PUP list. Mitchell passed his physical after recovering from a groin injury that has kept him from taking part in practices this summer.

With Mitchell back to work, the Steelers can get a better idea of how he and Troy Polamalu work together as the team’s starting safeties. Polamalu didn’t take part in most of the team’s voluntary work this offseason, leaving the duo with some catching up to do now that Mitchell is finally able to take on a full workload.

The Steelers open up their preseason schedule against the Giants on Saturday, although it is unclear if Mitchell will play in that game or if the Steelers will give him a bit more time to practice before throwing him into the fray.
