Steelers Bring Veteran S Will Allen Back Into the Fold

The 32-year-old Allen has played five of the last six seasons for Pittsburgh.

On the de facto first full day without Troy Polamalu as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the club re-signed another safety Friday, reaching a deal with 12th-year pro Will Allen.

The signing of Allen was noted in the NFL’s Friday personnel notice, a list of the day’s player additions and departures as turned into the league by clubs.

The 32-year-old Allen has played five of the last six seasons for Pittsburgh. He appeared in all 16 games for the Steelers in 2014, starting four games in place of the injured Polamalu, who announced his retirement Thursday night. Overall, Allen (6-1, 200) has notched 329 tackles and six interceptions in his NFL career, which began in 2004 with Tampa Bay.

Allen figures to be one of the competitors to replace Polamalu at strong safety, though the Steelers surely must hope that third-year pro Shamarko Thomas takes a step forward in 2015. It’s also possible Pittsburgh could add a safety in the draft.
