Steelers Re-sign TE Xavier Grimble

PITTSBURGH — Tight end Xavier Grimble was one of seven Steelers signed to contracts or extensions announced by the team on Monday.

Grimble, who largely played behind Jesse James and Vance McDonald when they were healthy, was an exclusive rights “free agent,” meaning Pittsburgh could retain him for another year with any offer above the league minimum.

Though Grimble’s usage declined slightly in 2017, he said Monday afternoon before his signing was announced that he was especially hoping to return to the team for the 2018 campaign.

“Great team, great system, great people, great organization top to bottom. There’s a lot of good people in here, a lot of great veterans around,” Grimble said. “This is a rare place to be. I’d love to be here.

“It’s my favorite team.”

He spent training camp of 2014 with the New York Giants, parts of the 2014 regular season with the San Francisco 49ers’ and New England Patriots’ practice squad before making Pittsburgh’s in 2015 and the active roster the following season.

He has 16 catches for 150 yards and three touchdowns in 28 regular season games as a Steeler.

“I feel like this is the first place I even had a role. So, for me, a young guy, I just want to play. It don’t matter how much or how less. I mean of course I want to be out there as much as I can, but to make a 53-man team roster, I really know what that means to do. That’s — you’re a 1 percent guy.

“So I’m happy if I can get to that point each year. And then from then on I’m gonna do whatever the coaches ask me to do,” Grimble said. “That’s just how I roll.

Long snapper Kameron Canaday was also given a one-year contract extension.

Practice squad cornerback Dashaun Phillips, tight end Jake McGee, outside linebacker Farrington Huguenin and Jordan Dangerfield were re-signed to futures contracts. Former Pitt inside linebacker Matt Galambos, who spent 12 days in two stints on the Steelers’ practice squad before picking up an injury and going on the practice squad-injured list, was signed to a futures contract, too.

He had been cut at the end of training camp.
