Steelers Star Troy Polamalu Reportedly out vs. Jets

What already was a banged-up Pittsburgh Steelers team and defense just got worse. According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Troy Polamalu, who is listed as questionable, will sit out Sunday’s home opener against the New York Jets:

Ryan Clark, James Harrison and Rashard Mendenhall were all out last week against Denver. Clark was out due to a medical condition related to high altitude, and Harrison and Mendenhall were out because of injuries.

Those three and a beat-up offensive line, to put it lightly, were all unable to perform against the Broncos last Sunday night, and we saw some of the ramifications. Peyton Manning threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns on only 19 completions.

Polamalu is the on-field leader for the Steelers, with his ability to swarm the ball in coverage and around the line of scrimmage. Pittsburgh is a completely different defense with him off the field, and it was already a defense that appears vulnerable to getting gashed by some of the better offenses in the league.

Injuries are a part of football and no team knows that better than the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Every year, it seems like the same situation—whether it’s Ben Roethlisberger battling bumps and bruises, Rashard Mendenhall being sidelined or defensive standouts Polamalu and Harrison or the offensive line getting dinged up.

That’s the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. As Mike Tomlin always says, “The standard is the standard.” There will be no excuses from the Steelers come Sunday.
