2018 Steelers Training Camp Player Preview – Matthew Thomas

Matthew Thomas comes into this year’s training camp unexpectedly high expectation

With the Steelers failing to draft an inside linebacker in this year’s NFL Draft, they instead found a player in Thomas who is as intriguing a person as he is a player. Of all the available linebackers in this year draft class, the linebacker out of Florida State had the highest SPARQ score; in other words, Thomas an incredible physical specimen. With the void left by All-world linebacker Ryan Shazier to fill, Thomas’ athletic skill set make him the more desirable candidate to fill in the role of starting mack linebacker, alongside veteran Vince Williams. Even with the free agent signing of Jon Bostic, and the emergence of third-year linebacker Tyler Matakevich as a possible candidate for the starting position; many expect Thomas to not only challenge for the spot but to assert himself as the true starter for this coming season.

Chances of Making The Roster

The only thing stopping Thomas from being the starting linebacker is himself. Admittedly, Thomas has been his own worst enemy throughout his collegiate career and has worked hard to put himself in the right mind space. Thomas is so gifted athletically, he can play either at the inside or outside linebacker position, as he did with Florida State. For him, consistency is key as he needs to perform at a high level each day in camp, participate enthusiastically in special teams, and be the most visible player on the field in their preseason games. For Thomas, this opportunity could be the last chance he has in realizing his NFL dreams, what remains to be seen is how much is he willing to work to make it happen.
