Armchair GM – Some Intriguing Undrafted Free Agent Signings

I don’t know about you but I’m always pulling for the underdog. I had a guy named Ramon Foster on one of my mocks way back when. The Steelers didn’t draft him but you know the rest of the story. And besides there is nothing that makes a Mock Nerd feel better than saying “I knew about that guy.” Sort of like I did with Ramon just there…

We’ve got a Strong Man, a Slash, TE turned OT, small school overachiever, as well as some potential D-line and interior O-line help.

Got to start off with the eye-popper.

Kevin Whimpey, OT/OG, Utah State, 6′-5″, 306#  – An eye-popping 39 reps at 250# on his Pro Day. “Started all 14 games at left tackle and earned first-team all-Mountain West honors… Had an overall performance grade of 84 percent for the season and graded out at 80 percent or better in 13 of the 14 games he started… Graded out at 90 percent in both assignment and effort… Finished the season with 64.0 knockdowns to lead the team, including a season-high 16 against Idaho State” 3 year starter at Left Tackle grading north off 80% for Junior and Senior year.

Tyler Murphy, WR/RB/QB/Slash, Boston College, 6′-2″, 215# – Exciting QB to Wide Receiver convert. I’m a sucker for any slash potential. 1079 rushing yards, 6.3 ypc, 10 TD. Passing 1526 yds, 11 TD, 10 INT, 127.2 ypg.

Cameron Clear, Texas A&M, 6′-5″ 277# OT/TE – Sounds like some possible sneakiness for our two Tackle sets, hmm??? – “Although the resume is unimpressive with only 10 career catches, Clear’s best football might be ahead of him. He started his career as a highly-recruited tight end at Tennessee, but was dismissed prior to his sophomore season after a felony arrest (May 2012) for accepting and selling stolen property.” Arrest, no conviction. Early problems. Maybe not so much of a big deal.

Ross Scheuerman, RB, Lafayette (Pa.) – Small school multi-purpose back with good speed. “Appeared in all 11 games, rushing for 1,191 yards in his second straight season eclipsing the 1000-yard plateau…carried 236 times for 1,191 yards and 12 touchdowns…first Lafayette player since 2003 to lead team in rushing and receiving, reeling in 57 catches for 521 yards and three TD’s…put out 1,868 all-purpose yards, the sixth best mark in the nation…All-Patriot League.”

B.J. Finney, C/OG, Kansas State, 6′-4″, 318#, Tough in the trenches with a stout body, low-center of gravity. Ex-wrestler, uses hands to his advantage. “Above-average awareness and vision, sensing and anticipating the action well. Plays like a veteran and isn’t surprised by much.” Light on his feet, good in pulling, with a nice kick slide in pass protection. High character individual with strong leadership skills and a resilient attitude.

The Rest of the Crew.

Nigel Crawford-Kinney, DT/DE, Saint Augustines, 6′-4″, 307# – “Arm: 34 5/8, Wingspan: 80 1/4,”

Dominique Davis DT/DE, Liberty, 6′-5″, 277#, – “Arm: 34 1/2, Wingspan: 82 1/2”

Miles Dieffenback, G, Penn State, 6′-3″, 307 – ” Plays with a good base and has desired strength and power. Technique needs work. Quick thinker. ACL injury

Reese Dismukes, G, Auburn, 6′-3″, 296#. Stout body, low center of gravity, good hand use. Struggled with bigger Nose Tackles. May be too light for NFL.

There’s honestly nothing on these three guys. No Combine invite, no nuthin’. But Steelers scouts saw something in them so who knows?

Brandon Prate, DE, Illinois State, 6′-3″, 288#.

Collin Rahrig, C/OG, Indiana, 6′-2″ 293#.

Eli Rogers, WR/KR, Louisville, 5′-10″, 187#.

Anything in quotation marks is from scouting reports is from my good friends at www.nfldraftscout.com.

Well, Those are the guys. They all enter into camp equal, no matter whether they were drafted or not, so they’ll all be given their chance to shine… maybe the Steelers will find a diamond in the rough.

Go Stillers!!!
