Steelers select Miami defensive end Anthony Chickillo with compensatory pick in sixth round

Pass rushers are piling up in Pittsburgh. Former Steelers linebacker and current outside linebackers coach is happy about it. With their compensatory sixth-round pick and 212th overall, the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted 6-foot-3, 267-pound Miami edge rusher Anthony Chickillo.

“You can never have enough pass rushers,” Porter said.

Chickillo tallied 124 tackles, 17.5 for a loss and 12 sacks in his three seasons at Miami. He ran a 4.79-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine.

He said his grandfather played for the Steelers in the 1950s, though seemingly not in a regular season game as he doesn’t appear in team records. His father played nose tackle for the San Diego Chargers and New York Jets in the mid-1980s.

The former Hurricane may move inside in Pittsburgh’s 4-3 nickel package, Porter said. He also said that Chickillo did not drop into coverage with the Hurricanes.

“We’re trying to go forward,” Porter said. “We’re not asking you if you can go back in coverage. If you’re a guy that’s going to come in and get sacks for us, we’ll take that. We have enough outside linebackers to in certain situations we want to play him in rush downs, we’ll play him in rush downs.”
